After the passage of the GOP tax plan in the United States Senate, some progressives took to social media to target Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who is suffering from brain cancer.
The worst of the worst have pulled out their keyboards to wish death and suffering on McCain because he dared to have a different opinion on governmental operations than they do.
Here are the scummiest tweets against McCain:
John McCain has the best healtcare. at Mayo Clinic which doesnt take insurance. Only money up front. McCain has taken away health insurance from his constituents and Americans giving himself the best cancer treatment. Consolation is it wont work, he will die in screaming agony

But that’s who John McCain is — a spineless do nothing who says the good thing and then does the bad thing. He doesn’t give a fuck about people or this country. He’s a selfish old fuck who should be left to die. https://t.co/psgj8q2rxu

At least we get to watch #JohnMcCain die soon.

Sen John McCain should die a tortuous death. Or he should be tortured some more. Asshole

I’m rooting for John McCain’s cancer.

I hope John McCain experiences what feels like an eternity of suffering in the moments before his painful death from advanced brain cancer

No death I can imagine would be painful or humiliating enough for what John McCain truly deserves.

Why write about these tweets? Because it’s an important reminder that cruelty is often the byproduct of a frustrated lack of understanding. The people that tweeted these terrible things about John McCain likely couldn’t describe to you with any degree of detail the contents and impact of the GOP tax bill. They’ve read angry headlines and blurbs, and have decided — based only on the little they know — that McCain is a monster who deserves suffering because he voted in favor of that which they’ve been told to hate.
As Anton Chekhov wrote: “The world perishes not from bandits and fires, but from hatred, hostility, and all these petty squabbles.”
